When a work is ready for its next home

How to resell a work of art kindly, for the work and for the artist: tell the gallery first, three ways it can go, the price and what moves with the work.

Collections change, and so do walls, homes and cities. Selling a work you own is a normal part of collecting. Doing it kindly, for the work and for the artist, is mostly a matter of order.

Tell the gallery first

The gallery that sold you the work usually knows who was sorry to miss it. It is the shortest route, and it keeps the artist's prices steady, which protects the value of what you own.

Three ways it can go

Open it to offers. A work with one of our certificates can be opened to offers from your account and appears on Art Auctions & Private Sales, without your name.

Consignment. The gallery offers it for you and earns a commission only if it sells.

A quiet sale. The gallery finds a buyer without publishing the work.

The price

Start from what you paid, look at what the artist's work sells for today, and be honest about condition. A realistic price finds a home; an ambitious one waits.

The artist's share

When a work with our certificate is resold, the artist receives a resale royalty and it is recorded with the certificate. We think that is how it should be.

What moves with the work

The certificate is transferred to the new owner with its whole history. If the sale leaves you a gain, mention it to your accountant.

There is more about the three routes in our guide to selling a work, or tell us about yours at Sell Art.
